Annual New York City Marines "Mess Night" Benefit

Recreating a 1920 Mess Night Dinner in London
Attended
by Winston Churchill

About the Menu - The 2009 New York City Marine Corps Council Mess Night is a recreation of a mess night held Saturday, the 20th of March 1920 Oddenino’s Imperial Restaurant on London’s Regent Street. That dinner as well as the 2009 Mess Night features recreation of such classic dishes as “Poule au Pot Alexandra” and the famous “Culotte de Culotte de Beouf Imperial.” The dinner in 1920 was attended by Sir Winston Churchill, among other dignitaries. Founded by Auguste Oddenino, Oddenino’s Imperial Restaurant operated for almost 50 years as one the “poshest” restaurants in London. (The manager of the “A La Carte Restaurant” aboard the Titanic had been trained at Oddenino’s; he survived the 1912 sinking.)

About “Mess Night” - “Mess Night” is a venerable Marine Corps tradition dating from the 1500s that few civilians experience. The event encompasses a cocktail hour, an opulent feast, good cheer and a range of fines for violating guidelines of the mess, which all guests are informed of at the onset. (Violations include foul language, chewing gum, rapping glassware for attention, rearranging table settings and discussing politics, shop, money or religion. Fines begin at $1 and escalate to $30 for “NYC elite” and civilians. Proceeds will benefit the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation and the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction.)
